Not every cat begins life with perfect health.
Some are born with medical conditions. Others contract illnesses that often leave them misunderstood, overlooked, or abandoned. Cats living with Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) are among the most vulnerable animals entering shelters today.
At Healing Paws Cat Sanctuary, we believe a diagnosis should never determine a cat's worth.

What is FeLV?
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a virus that affects a cat's immune system and may increase the risk of certain illnesses over time. Although there is currently no cure, a diagnosis does not mean a cat cannot enjoy a happy, loving, and fulfilling life.
Many FeLV-positive cats spend years doing all the things cats love—playing with toys, watching birds from sunny windows, chasing laser pointers, napping in warm beds, and soaking up affection from the people who love them.
At Healing Paws Cat Sanctuary, we believe a diagnosis should never define a cat's future.
How is FeLV Spread?
FeLV is spread through prolonged, close contact with another infected cat.
It is most commonly transmitted through:
❤️ Mutual grooming
🥣 Sharing food and water bowls
💧 Saliva and nasal secretions
👩👧 Mother cats passing it to their kittens
Because of this, FeLV-positive cats should live separately from FeLV-negative cats unless advised otherwise by a veterinarian.
FeLV does not spread to people, dogs, or other animals—it only affects cats.

Powder is the resident comedian of our FeLV Care Cottage and never misses an opportunity to make everyone smile. Friendly, curious, and full of personality, she's always the first to investigate anything new—especially if it happens to be a box!
Whether she's greeting visitors, supervising daily activities, or proving that "If I fits, I sits!" is a way of life, Powder reminds us every day that a FeLV diagnosis doesn't define a cat. Her joyful spirit, endless curiosity, and love for everyone she meets are a perfect example of why every cat deserves the chance to live a happy, loved, and fulfilling life.
Every month we'll introduce you to one of our FeLV/FIV-positive residents, sharing their unique personality, favorite activities, funny habits, and inspiring stories. 🐾 Meet Rhoda
If you've ever wondered where Rhoda got her name, spend a few minutes with her and you'll quickly understand! Rhoda loves to "talk" and always seems to have something to say. Whether she's greeting her friends or carrying on a conversation with her caregivers, she keeps everyone smiling with her hilarious personality. Beneath all that chatter is an incredibly loyal and loving girl who enjoys the company of those she trusts. Rhoda reminds us that some of the biggest personalities can come in the smallest packages.
🐾 Meet Fedora
Fedora is the definition of a sweetheart. Gentle, affectionate, and always ready for a little fun, he has dedicated countless hours trying to catch the infamous Red Dot... although, much to his disappointment, it continues to outsmart him! When playtime is over, you'll almost always find him curled up beside one of the food bowls for his favorite nap—after all, he doesn't want to risk missing his next meal. Fedora's playful spirit and loving nature prove that life is meant to be enjoyed one game, one nap, and one snack at a time.

Sambuca prefers the quieter side of sanctuary life. A bit of a loner, he's happiest relaxing near a window or screen door where he can spend hours watching birds flutter by and insects buzz through the gardens. You can almost imagine him dreaming about chasing every butterfly, bug, and bird he sees. While he may enjoy his independence, Sambuca has a gentle soul and reminds us that every cat has their own unique way of finding happiness and contentment.

What is FIV?
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a virus that affects a cat's immune system, making it more difficult to fight certain infections. While there is currently no cure, FIV is not a death sentence. With proper veterinary care, good nutrition, and a safe indoor environment, many FIV-positive cats live long, happy, and fulfilling lives.
How is FIV Spread?
One of the biggest misconceptions about FIV is how it spreads.
FIV is primarily transmitted through deep bite wounds, most often from serious fights between unneutered outdoor cats. It is not easily spread through everyday contact.
Cats do not normally transmit FIV by:

🛏️ Sleeping together
🐾 Grooming one another
🧸 Playing together
😺 Casual social contact
Because of this, many FIV-positive cats live peacefully with other friendly cats under the right circumstances and with guidance from a veterinarian.
